INTERESTING HISTORICAL FACTS:

The History of The Fana Cardigan

The Fanakofte (Fana Cardigan) is a patterned knitted sweater or jacket, usually in two colors, featuring a base pattern of stripes and "lus" (a type of small motif), checkered patterns at the bottom of the body and sleeves, and eight-petal roses along the shoulders and the tops of the sleeves.

The Fanakofte, which is one of the best-selling Norwegian knitting models for skiing and leisure use, is based on a knitted sweater that was part of the traditional everyday attire for men in Fana (just outside of Bergen on the west coast).

The oldest preserved Fanakofte dates back to the 1880s.

In the book "Koftearven" by Annemor Sundbø, these sweaters are referred to as "striped sweaters."

Striped sweaters were often worn under naval uniforms, but also as undershirts by sailors along the entire European coast. However, it was Fana, located outside Bergen, that came to give the garment its name, especially as "lus" began to be knitted into the stripes, adding checkered patterns to the cuffs and eight-petal roses to the shoulder area.

In the early 20th century, the sweater was published in pattern form and became very popular throughout the country. The sweater was both a jacket and a pullover, and the white section at the bottom of the body was replaced with ribbing in the base color, or a roughly 10 cm wide band with checkered patterns.

The Fana Cardigan is a unisex cardigan. This pattern has a positive ease of about 1 inch.

Kristinsept2023

HELLO! I am Kristin, and I am the creator and teacher of all the knitting courses that we offer here at Norwegian Knitting!

I am originally from Bergen (the most beautiful city in Norway!) - but I now live in Trøndelag, where the weather is actually better (yes, it`s true!). Trøndelag offers crisp, cold winters with lots of snow - and I love that! Also, my daughters and SIL`s + 6 grandchildren live here, and keep me busy and active.

My passion is to teach, and I am a Music Teacher by profession - and a knitting teacher by choice! And - I love it! I have been knitting since childhood, and a few years ago, I realized that other people were actually very interested in learning how to knit "the Norwegian Way"!

Is this for me?          YES - you can do this!!
